Reliance Jio will find it tough to meet 100 million target: reportReliance Digital stores across the country are struggling with demand for Jio SIM cards, with waiting period for some extending to almost a month

Mukesh Ambani’s ambitious goal to sign up 100 million customers for Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd by year end may be tough to achieve due to slower subscriber additions than required and faces the risk of mass desertions once the free trial period is over, a brokerage report said.

“The run-rate of SIM card sales since the launch of the welcome offer is 1 lakh per day. With addition of more distribution channels (e.g., modern and mom-and-pop stores), our channel check indicates the run-rate to go up 3-4x,” Mumbai-based brokerage firm Motilal Oswal Securities Ltd said in a statement.

On 1 September, Ambani, chairman of Reliance Jio’s parent Reliance Industries Ltd, set a target of acquisition of 100 million customers on Jio network “in the shortest possible time, and set a world record”, aiming to cover 90% of India’s population by March 2017.

Reliance Digital stores across the country are struggling with demand for Jio SIM cards, with waiting period for some extending to almost a month. Since 5 September, the date of Jio’s commercial launch, people have queued up in front of stores from early morning. Incumbent telecom operators are expected to counter Jio’s aggressive tariff plans with their own strategies.

According to the brokerage, considering three to four times growth in daily subscriber addition from the current level of 1 lakh, monthly addition works out to 9 million, leading to about 36 million subscribers by end of December.

The report said that by adding 36 million subscribers by year end, Jio will reach a user base which is about half the size of smaller telcos such as Reliance Communications Ltd, Tata Teleservices Ltd and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL).

An email sent to a Jio spokesperson seeking comments remained unanswered till press time.

Aliasgar Shakir and Jay Gandhi, analysts at Motilal Oswal, also said that it will be difficult to retain customers once the welcome offer, where the services are entirely free, expires.

“It will be interesting to see if RJio is able to retain its subscribers after the end of the welcome offer. Based on our channel check, there could be about 30-40% retention, which implies about 10-15m subscribers,” report stated.

The current subscriber base of Jio is 5 million and Jio SIM cards are only being distributed through Reliance stores.

Reliance Jio Speed Plummets After SIM Cards Become Available to Everyone

Reliance Jio Speed Plummets After SIM Cards Become Available to Everyone

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Reliance Jio SIM cards became available to everyone on Monday
  • Flooded with customers, Reliance Jio speeds have plummeted
  • Meanwhile, getting a Jio SIM continues to be impossible

Ever since Reliance Jio was first announced, it’s been getting a lot of attention. The Preview Offer that started in May first allowed Reliance employees, and then users of specific handsets, to try out the Jio network completely free without any limits on usage. For people who were on board in that period, the Reliance Jio connection was fast, reliable, and a real alternative to the very limited broadband connections that we have in India.

With the launch of Reliance Jio, the company also announced its various plans, which were quite appealing. But perhaps best of all, it announced the Jio Welcome program, under which you can use 4GB of 4G data daily on the Reliance Jio network without paying anything until December 31, 2016. That’s a lot of value to give away free, so it’s no surprise that everyone wants to be on the network now.

Which is why, predictably enough, Reliance Jio SIM cards are impossible to find now as the company is – according to sources – struggling to activate the huge number of SIMs it issued on the very first day of availability. However, that’s not the only problem that people are facing.

(Also seeBSNL Says Will Match Reliance Jio Plans Tariff-by-Tariff)

During the Preview Offer period, when the number of users on the ground was very low, people would excitedly share on social media how fast the connections were. As Gadgets 360 pointed out in every single article we wrote before the official launch, the Preview Offer could not realistically give a picture of what the Reliance Jio network would be like after the launch. One week in, it’s completely clear that speeds have plummeted, call drops are routine, and the network disconnects from time to time as it is slammed by huge numbers of users.

Now the latter at least can be blamed on Jio’s ongoing tussle with other telcos. Reliance Jio has called for MNP support from other telcos, and said that it will record operator-wise call-drops data. Last week, Trai also met with telcos todiscuss interconnect issues. But even leaving aside those concerns, Jio is definitely facing a tough time in terms of delivering its service.

(Also seeList of VoLTE Mobiles That Will Work on the Reliance Jio Network)

For example, during the Preview Offer period, seeing speeds between 20Mbps and 25Mbps was the norm in South Bengaluru. Now, seeing speeds in excess of 5Mbps is cause for celebration. Over an extended period of usage, typical speeds have stayed under 3.5Mbps.

The problem isn’t just limited to our own experience either. Many users who signed up for Reliance Jio during the preview offer are now finding the connection much slower than before.

“I was using it for all my calls earlier, but now the calls drop 25-30 times a day,” says Mihir Gupta, a Jio user based in Delhi. “Speeds are also much slower now. It’s still better for Internet, but for calling it’s become useless.”

(Also seeWhat You Need to Know to About Reliance Jio’s JioNet Wi-Fi Network)

Another user we spoke to, Shweta Jha who is also based in Delhi, says that the connection now stops working from time to time. “It always used to cut out inside some buildings,” says Jha, “but now it’s pretty much useless indoors.”

“I was regularly getting speeds of over 20Mbps,” says Mumbai-based Ankit Pradhan. “Now it’s usually under 5Mbps. People had been talking about using Jio as a replacement for wired broadband, and even I was thinking of doing that, but with the speed being so unreliable, I don’t think it makes sense at all.”

(Also seeHow and Where to Get Reliance Jio SIM Card)

Reliance Jio is the only “full-4G” network in India, the company says. It’s been built from the ground up for high speed data, apparently. But unless the company can find a way to cope with the huge influx of users that it’s facing right now, it’s definition of high-speed will be as bogus as the definition of broadband in India.

(Also seeHow to Get Started With Reliance’s JioFi Hotspot)

Realistically speaking, all the telecom networks in India are delivering abysmal speeds to customers in the name of 4G; given that spectrum is finite and the number of users is huge, that’s perhaps not unexpected. People who were expecting the speeds of the Jio Preview Offer even after the commercial rollout were misguided at best, but what we’re seeing now is frankly worse than what we expected. In fact, it would be completely unacceptable if it wasn’t free for now – but unless Reliance Jio can deliver a better experience for users, it won’t be worth porting your number over, as you can expect your carrier to match the rates soon enough.

Reliance Jio vs Bharti Airtel: Corporate duels in the 21st century

Corporate history is littered with marquee rivalries. Boeing vs Airbus. HUL vs P&G. Nike vs Adidas. Ford vs GM.

Great rivalries make great stories. But for multiple reasons, corporate duels no longer feel the same in the digital-led 21st century.

Corporate rivalries make battles interesting.

There is one playing out in the telecom sector right now. Bharti Airtel‘s Sunil Bharti Mittal is readying for a fierce and bruising battle with Mukesh Ambani who has just rolled out Reliance Jio 4G network. In the works since 2010, Ambani has already ploughed in $16 billion – supposedly the biggest greenfield project in India – to get started.

This is the second time the two telecom czars are dueling. The first battle was fought in early 2000s. Mittal is now pacing up to match Ambani’s offensive. He will be investing over $9 billion in the next three years to beef up Airtel’s network.

Rivalries make things difficult. But they also help in multiple ways. For one, they help in rallying the troops. A great rivalry can charge up the team, bringing lot of energy, emotions and passion in a dull, brutal mercenary game of bottomlines and toplines.

Good rivals can bring out the best in you. Novak Djokovic recently admitted that while it was tough to be playing in an era dominated by tennis stars Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, But also, he admitted said, it were these great rivalries that played a big part in shaping his successful tennis career.

Airtel’s Mittal too admitted to The Financial Times in a recent interview “If Reliance was not there on the horizon the pace of our rollout would have been slower.”

Competition is a byword in the corporate world. Everybody deals with them. But some rivalries are special. They are not just rivalries. They are made of bigger stuff. They go far beyond. Part of the folklore where they are lived, ritualised and instilled as part of the corporate DNA – inside and outside the corporate office. If you have worked with Pepsi or Coca-Cola, you would know. Consuming the rival’s product is a strict no-no. Doing it in public is a professional hara-kiri.

Once upon a time, Korean giants LG and Samsung had that very special place for each other. The unwritten rule then was that no Samsung employees can use LG product and vice versa. The story goes that when Samsung hired Pradeep Tognatta in early 2000s, Tognatta invited Korean Samsung executives home for dinner. The Koreans found LG ACs installed at Tognatta’s home. Soon, Samsung honchos got Samsung ACs delivered to his place to replace the LG ACs.

Corporate history is littered with marquee rivalries. Boeing vs Airbus. HUL vs P&G. Nike vs Adidas. Ford vs GM.

But there are many reasons why corporate duels in the 21st century does not feel the same any more. Old ones like Coca-Cola and Pepsi are losing their fizz. And you don’t see many new iconic ones make headlines.

For a variety of reasons, the world of marquee duels is changing. Here are a few ways in which corporate duels are getting a new makeover in the digital era.

Competition from the garage:
In the digital world, growing up on heavy doses of innovation and lot lesser cash, companies like Google know that it’s the guy somewhere in the garage who will give them competition. This has happened in sector after sector. Whoever thought Walmart will face heat from Amazon. Or a young Silicon Valley company like Tesla could give American and German car makers such a tough competition.

Shorter business cycles:
Volatility in the corporate has risen sharply. Think of Nokia. It first entered the mobile phone business in the 1990s. Within a decade it had become the most popular handset brand in the world. And over the next decade it lost its grip so much that it was sold to Microsoft recently. For Nokia all it took all of two decades to start afresh, rise to the top and then touch the bottom. With such volatile fortunes, MNCs do not have the luxury, resources and time to build iconic rivalries.

It’s a fluid corporate world:
Google is a search company. But it considers Amazon as its biggest rival. For companies in the digital era, boundaries around products and services are very fuzzy and their business can often be amoeba-like growing in multiple and unpredictable directions. For a great corporate duel, existence of a sharply defined rival is critical. And that seems to be often missing in the digital era.

Era of frenemies:
The corporate world is increasingly lot more complex. It is very global. Dominance in one market may not easily extend to new market. Cab hailing app Uber may be a leader in the US but in China it was humbled by DiDi. Also technology is making the playing field lot more complex forcing erstwhile rivals to at times collaborate. Think of the e-reader market where Apple iPad and Amazon Kindle compete aggressively. Amazon took the bold step of making Kindle Reader available on Apple products like the iPAd and iPhone enabling its consumers to read e-books on Apple devices.

In the deep-pocketed automobile world, Toyota is now partnering with luxury car maker BMW to develop a rear-wheel-drive sports car family.
